The nose really leans towards the more savory end of the spectrum, with aromas of pepper, herbs, earth and tar surrounding a core of cherry and blackberry fruit. A big, meaty red with gobs of black licorice notes to compliment the dark fruit and spice on the palate, and firm tannins that present themselves on the finish. Will easily age another 10-15 years. Enjoy this with food - a classic Provencal stew would be an ideal pairing!

The deeper, richer, fuller 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Lucille Avril exhibits beautifully sweet black cherry and blackberry fruit intermixed with hints of seaweed, roasted herbs (Provencal style, of course) a full-bodied, powerful palate with stunning concentration, and lots of spice, pepper, and garrigue. A blend of 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 5% Mourvedre, 20% aged in small barrels and 80% in tank for 10 months, this is a quintessential Provencal, big, full-bodied, exuberant red to drink over the next 10-15 years.
As noted in my last few reports on Chateauneuf du Pape, Domaine Durieu has emerged as one of the up-and-coming stars of Chateauneuf du Pape, although that is an expression used increasingly in this appellation, where a young generation of men as well as a surprising number of women are exploiting the diverse terroirs and impressive percentage of old vines at a level never before seen.
