about this wine:
From 1983 on, Rancia's 100% sangiovese has consistently reflected its own terroir, demonstrating a lengthy progression, a liveliness, and an elegance truly rare and distinctive.Vigneto Rancia, located at an altitude of 400 metres and with a good, south-facing exposure, covers about 6 hectares (2.4 acres), with a total of 13,980 vines. New plantings in recent years have utilized the massal selection genetic material gathered from the old Rancia vineyard.

The color is dark purple almost opaque to the rim. Dynamic perfume of crushed flowers, blackberry and cassis lifts nicely from the glass, followed by secondary notes of creosote, saddle leather and fresh earth. The palate follows suit with densely packed liquor of blackberry and cassis which expands nicely on the mid-palate. Supple tannins bring the wine focus and balance.

The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is another of the truly great wines in this tasting. It is most similar in style to the 2001 for its power, but also has some of the aromatic finesse and complexity of the 2004. Layers of fruit build to the explosive, huge finish. Today the 2006 is big, implosive and tightly wound, but it will be absolutely gorgeous in another few years. Actually, it already is. Since its release a few years ago, the 2006 has continued to move towards a more refined expression of Sangiovese while maintaining all of the structure it showed as a young wine. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2035. 96+ points.
I will never forget this once in a lifetime tasting of Felsina's flagship Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia. What started out as a casual survey of a few older vintages turned into a complete vertical as proprietor Giuseppe Mazzocolin and long-time oenologist Franco Bernabei surprised me with bottle after bottle of fabulous Rancias going back to the inaugural 1983...The single biggest takeaway from this tasting is the amazing consistency of the wines across all vintages. Considering its modest price, Rancia remains one the most fairly priced, cellar worthy wines in the world. -Antonio Galloni
