Dark ruby core with a brick rim. Captivating bouquet of black cherry, wet earth, and dark plum, followed by black tea, spices, and smoked cedar, all of which continue onto the palate. Nice initial entry of fruit, followed by good structure, chewy tannins and a lingering finish. Unique blend for the left bank: 70% merlot and 30% cabernet sauvignon. This is produced by the same team as Pichon Baron. A great value, considering near neighbors include Mouton-Rothschild, Pontet Canet, and Lynch Bages. Enjoy with dinner this evening after a good decant, or hold through the next 4-5 years.

There's lots of currant and blackberry in this, with hints of sandalwood. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins that turn chewy, but also a solid core of fruit underneath, with new wood. Structured and serious. Best after 2012. -JS
