93 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2009

A top-notch success, the dense ruby/purple-colored 2006 Smith-Haut-Lafitte offers aromas of smoky, juicy black currants, graphite, earth, truffles, and forest floor. Full-bodied with superb purity, noticeable but sweet tannins, this round, generous, long wine should drink nicely for 15-20+ years.

92 points,

Stephen Tanzer's IWC, June 2009

Full red-ruby. Expressive nose offers plum, black raspberry, tobacco, mocha, truffle, licorice and herbs. Suave, fine-grained and vibrant; generous and plush yet light on its feet. Finishes very long and classy, with sweet tannins, terrific energy and palate-coating persistence and perfume. Not as fat or full as the 2005, but just a step behind that wine. 92 points

90 points,

Wine Enthusiast, March 2009

With its prominent new wood, here is a wine that goes for spice, caramel and high toast flavors. It has great power, a wine that is currently all structure, leaving the fruit to gain in richness at a later stage. R.V.

92 points,

Wine Spectator, March 2009

Gorgeous aromas of dark chocolate, cappuccino and berries lead to a full body, with luscious fruit and round tannins. Long and voluptuous for the vintage. Impressive. Best after 2014. 10,000 cases made. -JS

About Winery

The noble Bosq family started growing grapes here as early as 1365. The property was purchased in the 18th century by Scotsman George Smith, who gave the estate its present name.

In 1990, Daniel Cathiard fell in love with the property and joined the list of prestigious owners, firmly intending to further enhance Smith Haut Lafitte's tradition of excellence. He combined the most modern winemaking techniques and age-old methods: organic compost, small wooden vats, ageing on the lees in barrel, etc.

According to Robert Parker, "One can't say enough about what proprietors Daniel and Florence Cathiard have accomplished at this estate since 1990. ..They have fashioned one of the most consistently outstanding wines, both white and red, over the last two decades."
(The Wine Advocate, April 2010)

Famous around the world for its wonderfully elegant red wine and the sophisticated bouquet of its white wine, Smith Haut Lafitte undoubtedly deserves the special care that is lavished on it.

A dark red core leads to a bright ruby rim with hints of violet. Very dark fruit aromas of boysenberry and blackberry are supported by hints of roast coffee and a touch fresh mint. Dark and concentrated on the palate, with the mint carrying through from the nose and leading the palate to lush, cool blackberry, plum and cassis followed by lighter roast coffee notes on the mid-palate. Full bodied front to back, with great depth and lingering fruit on the finish. One of the stronger wines from Pessac in 2006.
