2006 Zyme Harlequin

Proprietary Blend: 750ml

$329.99

about this wine:

Intriguing is perhaps the word that best sums up this full bodied, powerful, dry red wine. It is a rich ruby red in appearance, without being excessively opaque. It displays purplish reflections and is dense and viscous. The nose offers a gamut of aromas that both succeed and mingle with each other, yielding a whole variety of fruity fragrances, notes redolent of oriental spices, herbal perfumes and scents of chocolate and preserves.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2011

The 2006 Harlequin is one of the most exciting, viscerally thrilling wines I have tasted in a while. Sweet aromas of roasted espresso beans lead to wild cherries, mint, licorice, blackberry jam and star anise as this opulent, full-throttle wine shows off its inimitable class and pedigree. Today the oak remains a touch intrusive, particularly in the tannins, but there appears to be more than enough density in the fruit to provide balance. The finish is eternal. This is a profound effort from Celestino Gaspari and his team. Harlequin is made from as many as fifteen different varieties. The grapes go through a brief drying process prior to being vinified. The wine is then racked into French oak, where it spends two full years with no subsequent rackings. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. --- Antonio Galloni

About Winery

Zyme's history is a complex one, reaching back 25 years in winemaking and 40 years now in viticulture, which have served as the foundations for its current activities. Celestino Gaspari’s personal adventure began when he was very young, in Val d’Illasi, as he worked on the family property alongside his parents and studied crop science. The personal encounter that proved decisive, however, came when he was 20, when he met his future father-in-law, Giuseppe Quintarelli. He worked for 11 years at the Quintarelli winery, then left and became himself an influence in the birth and growth for some ten wineries in the local area. All of his experience in vitiviniculture led to the present winery, which welcomes the collaboration of other highly-qualified and equally-passionate individuals that today constitute the warp and woof of Zyme. Zyme is home to young men and women who are forward-looking, pro-active, and committed, and who grow professionally in synergy with the grapevines they tend.
