Reviews of 2006 Argyle Pinot Noir Reserve Pinot Noir
92 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate October 2008 The 2006 Pinot Noir Reserve is medium ruby-colored. Its superb bouquet is already complex with notes of spice box, earth notes, cherry, and raspberry. This leads to a smooth textured, elegant, ripe wine with vibrant acidity for the vintage and excellent overall balance. Drink this outstanding effort over the next eight years.
While the focus of this report is on 2006 Pinot Noir, it is undeniable that Argyle Winery is producing among the best sparkling wines made in the USA and they cannot be ignored. Argyle is also the hangout of veteran vigneron Rollin Soles who knows as well as anyone what’s happening in the Oregon wine scene. Argyle’s Pinot Noirs have a bit more competition than the Sparkling Wines but they have been up to the challenge for quite some time.
88 points, Stephen Tanzer May 2008 Light red color. Pungent cherry and dried rose aromas offer good clarity, along with a gentle smoky undertone. Round, sappy flavors of cherry preserves and baking spices, with firm tannins adding grip. There's nothing loose about this wine, and it really deserves some decanter or cellar time.
About 2006 Argyle Pinot Noir Reserve Pinot Noir
About the Winery Argyle
"Prospecting the New World’s coolest latitudes, Brian Croser and Rollin Soles staked a claim in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, a place ideal for late season ripened Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit. Since 1987, Argyle Winery has produced world-class methode champenoise Sparkling wine, barrel fermented Chardonnay and ‘silky’ textured Pinot Noir from low yielding vines on winery farmed hillside slopes." www.argylewinery.comArgyle Winery, under the leadership of longtime winemaker Rollin Soles,
produces 50,000 cases including 12,000 cases of some of the best
sparkling wine made in the USA. Argyle’s first vintage was 1987 and
they currently offer Riesling and Chardonnay in addition to sparkling
wine and, of course, Pinot Noir.
About the Wine
"This is a massive wine from a massively warm vintage. The liquid even looks more viscous than wine when poured into a glass! The aroma is deep toned and concentrated. Look for plum jam, black cherry extract, a hint of cedar smoke, and dark chocolate-mint spices. The flavor is mouth-filling and packed with plum sauce-black cherry stuffed with chocolate. See if you can find the plum pudding—alder wood smoke character. The texture is super-juicy all the way through to a very long lasting sweetness with sanded tannin memory.
Argyle's 2003 Reserve Pinot Noir has just received a fantastic review (July 2005) and score of 95 points from Anthony Dias Blue of Patterson’s Beverage Journal."
