97% tempranillo with the balance graciano. Dark inky red with a wide purple rim. A really dense nose is invigorating and intense, offering ample blackberry, black cherry, a hint of camphor and wood smoke and a dusting of cedar. With some more air violets and vanillin emerge. Soft on entry, the palate displays good minerality and good acidity to pull this through with some balsamic flavors. Flexing some tannic muscle on the finish, I'd decant now or hold for 2-5 years and enjoy through 2018.

This is the debut wine for Bodegas Orben. It is 100% Tempranillo sourced from vines ranging in age from 55 to 63 years from more than 75 micro-parcels. It offers up a superb kinky, sexy perfume of toasty oak, pencil lead, leather, black cherry, and blackberry. Rich and elegant on the palate, it has layers of succulent fruit, well-concealed tannins, impeccable balance and a 45-second finish. So loaded that it can be enjoyed now, it will nevertheless age effortlessly for 4-6 years and drink well through 2026. -Jay Miller

($35; 97% tempranillo with 3% graciano) Deep ruby. Fresh red berries and Asian spices on the nose. Richer cherry and dark berries on the palate, with a sexy floral note adding complexity. This silky, energetic wine finishes with mounting sweetness and a lingering note of mulberry. -Josh Raynolds
