Geoffrey Binder, JJ Buckley, September 2011

A beautifully translucent garnet with slight brick at the rim. This has a beautiful nose of crushed rose petals, orange rind and dried cherry with underlying notes of tar and wood spice. Medium bodied on entry and fleshing out with ripe dark red fruits, the fruit is supported by fine-grained, persistent tannins that carry through to a long finish. This should show nicely in about 3-5 years and hold for the next 10.

From the celebrated Cannubi Boschis cru, here's a bright and luminous Barolo that opens with a deep ruby color and aromas of cherry, cola and cassis. Black fruit, tar and spice appear on the palate and the wine tastes tart, plumy and surprisingly succulent compared to most Nebbiolo-based wines. M.L.

Wine Spectator, November 2011

A firm, chewy red, displaying cherry, savory and woodsy elements that play out on the taut, linear frame. This leans toward elegance in the end, with lingering notes of tobacco, spice and mineral. Best from 2014 through 2030. 600 cases made. - BS

About Winery

Virna represents the latest generation of the Borgogno family and after completing her studies in enology at the winemaking school in Alba in 1988, she joined her father Lodovico in the running of the family farm, and three years later she became the first woman in winemaking techniques from Turin University. In 1996 she married Giovanni Abrigo, who looks after the vineyards and the viticultural side of the estate. Together they also run Azienda Agricola Orlando Abrigo in Treiso, which produces Barbaresco and some interesting white wines.
