Reviews of 2006 Christian Moreau & Fils Chablis Blanchot Chardonnay
90 points, Burghound October 2007 Tasting note: An airy, pure and refined nose of dried white flower, lemon rind and a hint of quinine merge into round yet detailed and precise flavors trimmed in a very deft touch of wood that culminates in an admirably long finish. This is an understated and relatively forward effort that will have the advantage of being approachable young but aging well over the medium term.
91 points, Wine Spectator September 2008 Floral aromas and peach and citrus flavors mark this focused Chablis. Bright and dry, with a chalky feel and fine intensity on the lingering finish. There's a pronounced stony aftertaste. Best from 2010 through 2020. –BS
About 2006 Christian Moreau & Fils Chablis Blanchot Chardonnay
About the Winery Christian Moreau & Fils
Producer note: This 12.5 ha domaine is directed by Christian Moreau and his son Fabiènne;
the first vintage was 2000. They are very proud of the fact that
virtually all of their vineyards have average ages of over 45 years, which
they're quick to point out "naturally help to regulate yields and
while we will drop crop if necessary, it's much less work than with young
vines." The approach here is 100% manual harvesting, natural yeasts
and 5 to 8 months of élevage in up to 40% wood for the grands crus, only
5% of which is new. The rest see varying amounts of stainless and the
policy is for very little or even no lees stirring. The mise is done
in-house after a light filtration but no cold stabilization. Team Moreau
describes the 2006 vintage as one where "there was thankfully no
frost and an even flowering. July was very hot followed by a wet August
which helped further accelerate the already good maturities and then a
near perfect September put the finishing touches on the vintage. It's a
good thing that we got some rain in August because the heat of July caused
some of the young vines to begin wilting. We started picking the 20th of
September under perfect conditions and brought in impeccably clean fruit
with yields in the 50 to 55 hl/ha, which includes all of our appellations.
Sugars were more than good at between 12.5 and 13.2% so there was no
chaptalization and acidities were essentially the same as in 2005. In
fact, we would compare 2006 to 2005 except to say that at least for our
wines, we have slightly better tension in 2006." The quality here is
once again so good that I'm tempted to say that Chablis, along with Domaine
William Fèvre, has yet another leading light to add to the usual stars of
Raveneau and Dauvissat. I also had a chance to retaste the 2004 grands
crus and if anything, they are perhaps even better than my original
reviews so if you see them in the market, don't hesitate. Note: the '06
Petit Chablis and Chablis were bottled in May, 2007. (Frederick Wildman
& Sons, NY, NY; Hanson & Clark, Gunson Fine Wine and Thorman Hunt,
all UK).
