about this wine:

Location: Chateau Clerc-Milon is located in Pauillac, just between Chateau Mouton-Rothschild and Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. 69 acres producing 14,000 cases. Classification: 5th Growth Grape Varieties: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon , 25% Merlot, 10% other varieties. Vinification and aging: These wines receive the same treatment as their more famous neighbor and Rothschild stablemate, Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. Style: The wines of Clerc Milon are firm and well structured due to the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon used to make them. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2009

From the same stable as Mouton Rothschild and d'Armailhac, Clerc Milon, despite the relatively high percentage of Merlot (44%) combined with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Cabernet Franc, is dense, rich, tannic, and backward. Surprisingly muscular for this offering, which often exhibits a more precocious side, it offers up abundant amounts of creme brulee, chocolate, cedar, and black currants. This full-bodied Pauillac displays gorgeous purity and depth as well as moderately high tannins in the finish. Because of its freshness, structure, and density, it is reminiscent of a 1996 Medoc. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2028.

Stephen Tanzer's IWC, June 2009

Bright ruby-red. Expressive aromas of currant, tobacco, graphite, herbs, roast coffee and smoky oak. Supple, solid and broad, with a mouthfilling fleshiness leavened by good energy and vinosity. There's a medicinal reserve to the redcurrant and dark chocolate flavors. Finishes broad and long, with substantial dusty tannins and very good length. A more muscular style than Armailhac, also from the team at Mouton-Rothschild, and in need of at least five years of cellaring. 90 points

Offers a gorgeous nose of crushed blueberry and cream, with a hint of milk chocolate. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a pretty finish. Best after 2014. 15,000 cases made. -JS

About Winery

Chateau Clerc-Milon is located in Pauillac, just between Chateau Mouton-Rothschild and Chateau Lafite-Rothschild...69 acres producing 14,000 cases... 5th Growth..65% Cabernet Sauvignon , 25% Merlot, 10% other varieties... These wines receive the same treatment as their more famous neighbor and Rothschild stablemate, Chateau Lafite-Rothschild...This chateau was named a fifth growth in the Medoc Classification of 1855 but always seemed to be an underachiever considering its prime location between two first growths (Mouton and Lafite). It had prime location and soil but never realized the expectations that were placed upon it. The estate is marked by the half-finished chateau which sits on the property. In 1970, the Baron Philippe de Rothschild purchased the property and began a complete renovation of the vineyards and the cellars. New fermentation vats were added to lenghten the maceration time. The chateau started to show what it could become with the fabulous 1982 vintage and really came into it's own in about 1985...The wines of Clerc Milon are firm and well structured due to the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon used to make them. They have hints of raspberry and black currant in the nose and on the palate. These wines are able to easily age for a decade or longer but are suprisingly accessible at much younger ages. They are often approachable when 6 or 7 years old...

Wine video

The core is a very dark reddish purple, with bright blue notes on the rim. The aromas offer a nice complexity with cinnamon, spicy red fruits hints of violet and lilac, with a soft touch of vanilla and cedar. While soft and sweet up front, the wine builds on the mid-palate and has great depth and structure. Darker fruits come in on the mid-palate, leading to a spicy, lingering finish of cassis and vanilla. Tasted twice with consistent notes.
