The 2006 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape had a hard act to follow after the '07 Vieille Vignes. Nevertheless, it's an outstanding wine with darker, earthy aromas on the nose. Black cherry, licorice and roasted herb are all present, leading into a medium to full bodied palate. This balanced, rich wine is enjoyable now but should easily last for another 10 or more years.

The stunning, deep ruby/purple-hued 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits black fruits, licorice, incense, and hints of grilled meats and garrigue. While not as explosively aromatic or full as the 2007, the full-bodied, velvety textured, big, substantial 2006 is a top success for the vintage. Drink it over the next 15 years. - Robert Parker

Saturated red. Extremely fresh, sexy aromas of red and dark berries, smoky minerals and flowers, along with a suave garrigue note. Supple, finely etched raspberry and blackcurrant flavors stain the palate, picking up anise and lavender pastille qualities with air. There's a pinot noir-like grace here that's very interesting, especially married to this amount of depth and power. Finishes very long and precise.

Very juicy, with layers of raspberry and plum fruit cascading over each other, while fruitcake, red licorice, floral and mineral notes fill in the background. The long, driven finish lets the purity shine. Really fine-grained. A very consistent performer, this should flesh out nicely in the cellar. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. Drink now through 2023. -JM
