There is a lot to like early on here as the wine leads with intense aromas of smoked meats, white pepper and very deep, black-berry fruit, and it picks up the same traits on the palate before showing more than a few youthful angles and edges. Happily, its hard-charging fruit never skips a beat even as things toughen and tighten up at the finish. What in a lesser wine might have been limiting acidity is here the stuff of fine balance, and there are no doubts in our minds that the wine's lifeline will be long and its future one of beauty.

As for the 2006 Syrah Eddie's Patch, this looks like a whopper in the making. Huge notes of frying lard, Asian spices, blackberry, camphor, and smoked meats all regale the olfactory senses. Sumptuous, full-bodied, with low acidity and great fruit, this is a fabulously rich and possibly compelling Syrah to drink over the next 7-8 years.

Saturated purple. Exotically perfumed bouquet of red and dark berry preserves, smoked meat, potpourri and black olive. Textbook syrah on the palate, offering sweet raspberry, cassis, candied violet and smoky mineral flavors and a late note of chewing tobacco. Becomes livelier with air and finishes with excellent clarity and lingering mineral and smoke notes. This was fermented with one-third whole clusters.
