Chuck Hayward, JJ Buckley, August 2011

Black opaque colors. This densely packed wine is slow to reveal its bouquet, until intriguing aromas of roasted hazelnut, rosemary and black currant focus themselves. The flavors are backwards and restrained and, thanks to a little acidity, help to create a compact frame on the palate. This elegant profile is typical of Seppeltsfield district wines, as are the subtle, talc-like tannins. A sophisticated interpretation of Barossa shiraz, this showcases a refined yet intense palate and a striking combination of pure fruit and savoury undertones. Decanting is recommended for near term drinking but this will unfurl nicely over the next 15 years.

Quite cool and lifted bouquet, with cranberry, blackberry and a distinct floral character; the palate is vibrant and fresh, showing anise, plenty of fruit, oak and gently chewy tannin profile; long and seamless on the finish.

The 2006 Fat of the Land Shiraz Seppeltsfield is opaque purple-colored with a pleasing perfume of balsam wood, underbrush, mineral, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Dense and loaded on the palate, it is already exhibiting some complexity as well as 6-8 years of aging potential. This lengthy effort should offer prime drinking from 2015 to 2030. -Jay Miller

Opaque purple. Deep, pungent aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, cured meat and floral oils. Sweet and fleshy but focused, with energetic black and blue fruit flavors and an exotic candied violet quality. Impressive for its blend of elegance and power, this will repay at least another half-decade of patience. This was hard to get off my palate. -Josh Raynolds

Firm, focused and distinctive for its black olive overtones, with an earthy edge adding complexity to the ripe blackberry and licorice flavors, which linger nicely. Best from 2011 through 2018. 400 cases made. -HS
