An impenetrable dark color. The nose is reserved and closed even after a good splash in the decanter. A vigorous swirl reveals dark cherries and blackberries, pepper and spices, minerals and graphite. There is undeniable power and strength from the old vines here, with intense flavors on a compact frame. The dark fruits resonate on the palate and seem almost too rich but the firm structure, finely assimilated acids and mineral-laced tannins help reign in the texture. Just a baby at this point, there are many years of potential in this classically rendered vin de garde.

The flagship 2006 Old Bastard Shiraz was sourced from a 114-year-old vineyard and aged for 19 months in new and one year French oak. It exhibits an expressive nose of toasty oak, earth notes, and wild blueberry followed by a thick, dense, super-rich, opulent Shiraz with tons of savory fruit, spice notes, and impeccable balance. This exceptionally lengthy wine will have a drinking window extending from 2014 to 2028. -Jay Miller

From vines planted more than a century ago, this richly concentrated, voluptuous wine blossoms with time in the glass, revealing aromas of brandied black cherries and dark chocolate. The tannins are creamy smooth, the length on the palate prodigious. But at 15.5% alcohol, this wine's warmth is noticeable; opt for drinking it over the next 10 years. J.C.

Big, ripe and generous, delivering a powerful mouthful of spicy blackberry, black plum, licorice and tobacco flavors that push right through the fine tannins on the long, slightly hot finish. Best from 2010 through 2018. 500 cases made. -HS
