about this wine:

It was discovered that the plot of land known as "Il Carbonaione" was the first area to be replanted after World War I (1914-1918). This translates into the fact that these vines, more than 90 years old, are a rare example of the original clone of the famous "Sangiovese di Lamole" variety in the Chianti Classico area. Il Carbonaione is the culmination of knowledge and experience and therefore an important message of quality. Vittorio Fiore dedicates this wine to Tuscany and to Sangiovese; the region and the variety that have allowed him to fulfill his aspirations to produce the highest possible level of quality wine.

The 2006 Il Carbonaione is a big, dark wine. Imposing at first, it flows from the glass with tons of super-ripe blueberries, grilled herbs, new leather, spices, minerals and flowers. Today the oak is rather prominent, but all the wine needs is time in bottle to come together. The finish is long, pure and refined. Simply put, the 2006 Il Carbonaione is a gem that readers won't want to miss. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026.

Proprietors Vittorio and Jurij Fiore craft one of Tuscany's most unique wines from their vineyards high in the hills of Greve. Il Carbonaione is 100% old-vine Sangiovese made from the prized Lamole clone, a rare and prized mutation of Sangiovese found only in this part of Greve. The Fiores give Il Carbonaione roughly one year in 350 liter oak barrels (50% new), of which 90% is French and 10% American. Il Carbonaione is one of the most age-worthy wines in Tuscany, and has a track record of developing beautifully in bottle. It remains one of the best relative values in fine, ageworthy wine. - Antonio Galloni

Amazing dark color for a Sangiovese. Mind-blowing aromas of crushed blackberries, violets and blueberries, with sandalwood undertones. Full-bodied, with silky and focused tannins and beautiful, rich and subtle flavors. It lasts for minutes on the palate. Best ever from this estate, which is owned by legendary winemaker Vittorio Fiore. Sangiovese. Best from 2011 through 2017. 2,000 cases made. -JS

About Winery

The slopes of the Greve Valley are indisputably one of Italy's most ideal locations for the cultivation of vineyards and olive groves. Named for the river that passes through as it travels from a medieval hilltop town, this area happens to be one of the most important historical centers of the Chianti Classico region. Poggio Scalette takes its name from the landscape which is characterized by dry stone walls that support the terraces on which the vineyards and olive groves are planted.

After the death of the previous owner, Poggio Scalette remained abandoned for years until Vittorio Fiore, one of Italy's most famed winemakers, and his wife Adriana discovered the property in 1991. In 1996, 42 additional acres of land became available, enabling them to expand.
