Reviews of 2006 Mollydooker The Boxer Syrah
Alex Lallos, JJ Buckley June 2007 Deep purple color extends almost all the way to the vibrant purple rim of this heavily extracted Shiraz. Big open nose full of licorice, plum, and rose petals with a hint of spice shining through as well. Very rich and opulent mid-palate leads to a long and surprisingly well balanced finish.
94 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate January 2007 The 2006 Shiraz “The Boxer” is opaque purple. The compelling nose exhibits aromas of scorched earth, smoke, grilled bacon, blueberry compote, and blackberry liqueur. Full-bodied, thick and rich, this layered Shiraz is velvety-textured and opulent. The finish lasts for nearly a minute. It is a sensational value. It can be enjoyed now but will evolve for several years.
Mollydooker (the Australian equivalent of “Southpaw”– both Sparky and Sarah Marquis are left-handed) is the label of the renowned winemaking team of Sparky and Sarah Marquis. This is their second vintage following the schism with The Grateful Palate and the end of their involvement in the hugely successful Marquis Philips project. Total case production is 72,000, down from the 120,000 cases produced under the Marquis Philips label. They have also set up their own importing company in the United States.
Mollydooker has been divided into four tiers beginning with “The Lefty Series”. These five wines are line-priced at $20. Next up the ladder is “The Party Series” priced at $50 a bottle, followed by two wines comprising “The Love Series” priced at $80. At the top of the pyramid is one wine, “The Velvet Glove” Shiraz priced at $175.

90 points, Wine Spectator January 2007 Ripe and smoky. A big, polished mouthful of cherry and raspberry, with peppery, spicy overtones that mingle effortlessly with the fruit as the finish sails on. Drink now through 2011. 23,944 cases made. –HS

Gerhard B. May 2008 The fruit is rich and sweet without being cloying. Very pleasant mouthfeel and relatively long finish. Heat is less apparent that expected based on other tasting notes. I would not pair this wine with food, but it's a great wine for sipping by the fireplace. Not for the faint-of-heart and died-in-the-wool Old World drinkers, but a hedonistic pleasure for New World fans. Downside: I find it it a bit too oaky. With less oak, this would have gone up a star. |

Vanessa W. May 2008 Fruit Bomb City just got a new mayor. This wine has all the fruit you would need to last a lifetime worth of wine. Its over the top and it doesn't care. Pair this with any red meat or highly seasoned chicken. |

Peter M. May 2008 Very nice, medium dry with some sweet tannis. Not hot either. Nice fruit flavor, no off or unpleasant tastes/odors. Deep purple in color, so extracted left stain on the glass. Went very well with barbecue ribs and sauce and really stood up well to the flavorful sauce. I think it's okay and, for around $20, worth purchasing. I would age this 5 more years to see what it would give then. |

jorray April 2008

June 2007: LIVE Rating: this is dark almost opaque in the glass. The aroma of purple cream, just like the
2005. On the palate, there is a burst of multiple flavors. Plums,
chocolate, cream. These are moving across the palate, and moving
through time with the tannins. Oh, yes, I'll stay with this, and drink
more than I should. 5 stars. This wine was tasted as part of a Mollydooker Tasting Dinner - 2006 Vintage. --------------------------------------------------
July 2007: Tasted again from a full bottle at home: Still perfectly opaque in the glass, turning
purple just at the rim. The violets and cream nose shows just a touch
of light milk chocolate too. A bit of alcohol heat pumps out in the
aroma this time, since the bottle is at a warm room temperature, having
just come off a UPS truck. This nose is like a pleasant dream. But the
good thing is, you'll wake up to a sip! On
the palate, you get that chocolate-covered, plumy-sweet grape sensation
all over your mouth... top, bottom, sides... the intense, deep fruit
stands up to the 16.0% alcohol and lasts and lasts and lasts. No change
to the five stars out of five rating. Best wine value on the planet, in
one man's opinion. Remember
Snuffles the dog who loved dog biscuits on Quick Draw McGraw... he
would float down from the ceiling hugging himself after being fed one
of those magic biscuits. Well I'm Snuffles and this is the biscuit...

Michael P. April 2008 I know, this wine is too young, but if you drink it before 2009 or so, let it decant a long, long time |

James W. April 2008
One of the best value wines out there - sure it's $20 a bottle which isn't the cheapest wine on the market - but the quality and fruit that is delivered make it taste like a $40 bottle of Shiraz.
Beware if you don't like new world fruit bombs - this will probably kick you in the teeth. However, it has a wonderful balance and enough personality to make you want to buy a case - and you should!
