Opaque and darkly colored at the core with a narrow garnet rim. Rich and concentrated aromas of blackberry mix with intense spices-nutmeg, cocoa powder and cinnamon-creating an alluring bouquet. Creamy and round on the medium-weighted palate, those hints of chocolate mingle with notes of dried plum and black cherry. The bright, clean presence shows off savory textures and fresh acidity on the backpalate, which serves to lighten the wine's final impression, where slightly chalky tannins provide a dusty note on the finish. Approachable now and best with stews and meat dishes, expect more seamless integration of flavors over the next 6-8 years.

Brightly coloured; ripe, almost sweet black fruit bouquet; plummy and full of spice on entry, the complexity builds up, and more savoury and dark fruit comes through with a complexing element of dried herb and leather; medium-bodied, long and richly fruited on the finish. Screwcap.

Blended of two Brokenback vineyards and coming from heavier, darker soils, the 2006 Vat 8 Shiraz is predominately barrique aged with a little American Oak. Very deep garnet-black in color, it has some earthy, gamey notes presiding over the fragrant aromas of violets, cinnamon, dark chocolate, kirsch, and a whiff of cedar. Medium-high acid, medium-firm fine tannins, concentrated, layers of spices and dark fruits, finishing very long. Drink 2011 to 2018. 1500 cases made. -Lisa Perrotti-Brown
