Chuck Hayward, JJ Buckley, December 2009

Very similar in color to the 2006, a translucent garnet center with a pale pink rim. On the nose and palate, the similarity between the two vintages is remarkable with the subtle scents of sour cherries and rhubarb notes apparent in both wines. With air comes the aromas of dried strawberries, a hallmark of Santa Barbara pinot noir. To me, the 2007 has a leg up on the '06 with just a bit more freshness overall as well as more concentration on the palate. This wine is all about fruit with little oak apparent here. Great midpalate, a soft finish, and just the trace of tannin.

About Winery

Long before the Santa Maria Valley benchland was recognized as a great winegrowing region, the native Chumash Indians knew it as "tepuztli," meaning copper coin. Later, Spanish settlers translated the word as Tepusquet. As part of an 1837 Mexican land grant, "Rancho Tepusquet" was home to cattle and row crops throughout the 1800s.

Proprietor Barbara Banke acquired a large portion of the original Tepusquet Vineyard (planted between 1970 and 1971) in 1986 to serve as the site for Cambria winery. Over the last two decades the vineyard has been expanded, replanted and updated with new clones and rootstocks to take advantage of the unique climatic and geological conditions of the Santa Maria Bench.
