Geoffrey Binder, JJ Buckley, August 2010

This elegant pinot noir presents a ruby color in the glass and wild strawberry, bing cherries, a hint of cranberry and black tea on the nose. Those aromas carry through to the palate, accompanied by cola, crushed mineral, and a touch of forest floor. With a soft, round texture, this wine is very approachable now but should drink nicely for another 5-6 years. Try this one with grilled salmon or wild mushroom risotto.

What a beautiful Pinot Noir for drinking now with lamb chops or maybe a rich, exotic Ahi tuna tartare. Brilliantly crisp in acidity, with a clean, bracing mouthfeel, it offers dazzlingly rich flavors of raspberries, cherries, orange zest, Dr. Pepper cola and Asian spices, with smoky oak adding elaborate tiers of vanilla char. For the price, it's a very great buy. - S.H. (8/1/2010) - 95

Wine Spectator, June 2010

A rich, layered style, with firm, intense black cherry, plum and wild berry flavors that are full-bodied, intense and complex, ending with a long, persistent finish. Drink now through 2017. 2,728 cases made. -JL

About Winery

Fort Ross was established in 1812 by the Russian-American Company. In 1817 the first grapes in Northern California were brought from Peru and planted on a hillside near Fort Ross. (This predates any plantings in Sonoma and Napa counties.)  Two miles southeast of the historic town of Fort Ross, the vineyard was developed and planted by the owners, Lester and Linda Schwartz and their small crew starting in 1994.

Fort Ross Vineyard is a necklace of 28 small mountain vineyard blocks that cling to a sunny coastal mountain ridge overlooking the ocean. Less than a mile from the Pacific Ocean, Fort Ross Vineyard is one of the closest, if not the closest vineyard to the ocean in all of California.

Jeff Pisoni, the gifted winemaker from Pisoni Vineyards and Winery, is the new winemaker at Fort Ross Vineyard.
