The wines from "Les Avaux" are very deep and dark in colour. The bouquet is very varied and complex, with animal notes suggestive of leather and aromas of red and dark fruits, including red berries, blackcurrants and morello cherries.

Both silky and dense, in the mouth the Beaune 1er Cru "Les Avaux" has great distinction, and is very well balanced as well as warm and round. There are firm but not excessive tannins magnificently blended with savours of dark cherries with underlying meaty nuances.

Medium-pale garnet color throughout. Restrained aromas of red cherry, strawberry, black licorice, peppermint, and menthol with a touch of fresh tobacco. On the palate lies abundant fresh strawberry with a hint of mint and pine resin towards the back end. Each sip demands another from this medium bodied, easy to drink pinot. Beautifully bright throughout, this nicely balanced release will make a beautiful complement to lightly roasted meat, hard and semi-soft cheese, as well as hearty vegetable dishes.

About Winery

The Mongeard family arrived in Vosne-Romanée in the eighteenth century, and records show a Mongeard working as vigneron for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1786. In 1945, Jean Mongeard, whose mother was a Mugneret, found himself making wine at the age of 16. His father had died five years before, and there was no one left to do the job. The entire 1945 crop was purchased by Baron le Roy, Marquis d'Angerville and Henri Gouges. Gouges instructed the young Mongeard to personally bottle the wines, rather than sell in barrel.
