What a nose of white truffles and berries. Very aromatic. Then turns to flowers and dark fruits. Full and solid, with beautiful core of dark fruits and ripe tannins. Bright and fresh. First year of this vineyard near Verduno. 45 year-old vines. Better after 2015.

Scavino's 2007 Barolo Monvigliero is by far the most concentrated, rich and structured Barolo I have ever tasted from this historic vineyard in Verduno. Firm yet polished tannins frame an explosive core of dark red fruit, rose petals, mint and spices. The Monvigliero shows marvelous focus and intensity. It is one of the most tannic wines of the vintage, but also one of the most promising. Sweet, floral notes leave a lasting impression on the vivid, textured finish. Scavino's Monvigliero will be a fascinating wine to follow, although I fear it may require significant patience. This is a marvelous debut vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032. 94+ --- Antonio Galloni

Good full, dark red. Deep, pure, brooding aromas of black cherry, licorice and leather, plus a hint of oak spices. Offers lovely aromatic lift but comes across as tightly wound, even youthfully imploded, today, showing less texture than the more open-knit Ambrogio. Best on the finish now, showing talc-like tannins and classic structure. This very firmly built wine, from the northernmost vineyard in the Barolo zone, needs a good five or six years to expand in bottle.
