Alex Shaw, JJ Buckley, February 2010

Loads of dark berry fruit on the nose, nicely integrated with spice, bramble, pepper and just a touch of wet grass. The nose is compelling and more new world than classic Italian. The fruit fills the mouth and remains tight and focused through the finish, with dry tannins that would pair nicely with grilled meats or winter stews. This is a very food-friendly wine, and the tannins should soften nicely and add complexity over the next 4-6 years.

The 2007 Syrah is soft and caressing in its generous dark fruit. This entry-level red from D'Alessandro shows good length, and while some complexity may be lacking, the wine's balance and sheer drinkability more than compensate. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2011.

This is a beautiful set of new wines from D'Alessandro, a venerable property in Cortona that seems to be finding an inspired level of quality under its new ownership and the winemaking team led by Luca Currado of Vietti. These 2006s were already in barrel when Currado arrived. One of the first things he did was take the wines out of barrel earlier than had been the case in previous years. Currado has purchased large casks from Gamba, the renowned Piedmontese cooper, for upcoming vintages. Needless to say, it will be quite fascinating to see the direction these wines take in coming years. - Antonio Galloni

Dark ruby. A fruit bomb on the nose, with intense aromas of ripe red cherry, plum and red berries complemented by a hint of marzipan. Sweet, ripe and pure, with juicy red fruit flavors firmed by solid tannins and picking up a lovely peppery note on the moderately long finish. I'm not sure I would have recognized this as a syrah blind, but it's an attractive and very tasty food wine. -Ian D'Agata

Licorice and spices, with dark ripe fruits. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit, velvety tannins and a subtle tar and blackberry aftertaste. Best from 2010 through 2014. 5,335 cases made. -JS
