about this wine:
San Calisto is Valle Reale's flagship wine. This muscular yet refined red is made from 100% Montepulciano grown in the San Calisto parcel, the oldest plot in the Valle Reale estate. This special vineyard is located in one of Italy's most beautiful national parks, surrounded by the majestic Gran Sasso mountain range. Here, the vines benefit from the high elevation, a wide diurnal temperature range, lots of cool, breezy ventilation and limestone rich soils.

Opaque, black/ruby purple in color. Soaring aromatics include plum, dates, black currant and an almost late-harvested intensity on the nose. Additional aromatic nuances include a pronounced torrefied quality, as suggestions of tar and molasses lift from the glass. On the palate, the 2007 San Calisto is quite viscous, with mouth-coating fruit of black raspberry as well as hints of cocoa. Dusty tannins provide grip while the long, delineated finish remains focused, with bright acidity holding everything in place and contributing to the potential of a decade of further evolvement.

The top of the line 2007 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo San Calisto flows across the palate with layers of blue and black fruit. Mineral notes appear later, adding balance and proportion as the wine builds towards its explosive, elegant finish. The San Calisto spent 18 months in new French oak, all of which has been absorbed with no issues whatsoever. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. -Antonio Galloni
