90 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, June 2009

The opaque purple-colored 2007 Cal Blanca is 100% Tempranillo sourced from 80- to 100-year-old vines. It was aged in seasoned French oak for six months followed by three months in 5000-liter concrete tanks to provide unoaked oxygenation. It delivers a nose of roasted mineral, black cherry, and blackberry. This leads to a structured wine with exceptional richness, outstanding concentration, and a lengthy finish. Drink this remarkable value over the next six years. -Jay Miller

89 points,

Stephen Tanzer's IWC, August 2009

Glass-staining ruby. Highly pungent aromas of blackberry and blackcurrant preserves, violet and licorice. Impressively fresh in the mouth, displaying zesty dark berry flavors and a strong undercurrent of minerals. The floral quality repeats on the finish and lingers with very good tenacity. -Josh Raynolds

About Winery

Cal Blanca was founded in 2007 by Juan Pablo Peñalba (from the Torremilanos Family), Pablo Rubio (Peter Sisseck's vineyard manager for PSI in Ribera del Duero), Alberto Orte and Patrick Mata. The goal of Cal Blanca is to make an estate-bottled wine from a single vineyard in the only area within Toro (Cerro del Almendro) that possesses Limestone. Cal Blanca, means white chalk in the English language.

Toro, located southwest of Ribera del Duero in Zone 2 has a warmer clime than Ribera del Duero thus making wines that tend to be meatier and fuller bodied. The soil profile in Toro is mostly river stones and sand.
