The 2007 Crozes-Hermitage Les Varonnieres is a lighter effort displaying an attractive deep ruby/purple hue as well as outstanding concentration and purity, but not quite the weight and nuances of the 2006. More flattering and upfront stylistically, it should drink well for 15 years.

Deep, vivid red. Smoky raspberry and cherry on the nose, with complicating notes of violet and rose. Bright red fruit flavors are given depth by suggestions of olive and licorice, with bracing minerality adding focus. Finishes lively and precise, with the red fruit and floral notes repeating. There'd be no crime in drinking this now.

Very stylish, with soft but persistent mouthfeel to the blackberry, pepper, tobacco and cocoa notes. Features lingering black tea and iron notes on the finish. Drink now through 2015. 611 cases made. -JM
