Deep ruby core with a light garnet rim. Rich aromas of chocolate and red fruit provide a framework on the nose, with notes of raspberry, fresh flowers, and roasted spices to balance. The palate is medium-bodied, with firm tannins and acidity that lingers. Flavors of rose, tobacco leaf, and black fruit emerge on the mid palate as the creamy texture coats the finish. A delightful wine, this should be consumed over the next 10 years.

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District exhibits cedarwood, graphite and black currant characteristics along with medium body and good depth as well as richness. This is certainly an excellent, nearly outstanding wine, which is progress. Given the acid profiles, these wines will undoubtedly age reasonably well, but don't expect anything magical to develop.

One thing you can depend on concerning Clos du Val's Cabernets is that they're elegant. The winery resolutely refuses to kowtow to the modern style of ultraripe, extracted fruit, high alcohol and massive oak. This lovely Cab, which contains a drop of Merlot, defines their style, and is a joy to drink. It has rich, complex cherry and blackberry flavors, flecked with earth and herbs, and is just beginning a long journey. Now-2021, at least.
