Cory Gowan, JJ Buckley, August 2011

65% grenache, 35% syrah from 60-year-old vines. Aged in 40% oak. Dark red but lightly translucent with a glistening purple rim. Very concentrated and taut at this stage, lilting blue fruits appear, along with minerals, oak, licorice and a touch of woodsmoke. A tremendous core is just waiting to emerge, so I would decant and enjoy with rich cuisine or hold for a couple of years. Once this starts to flesh out and disclose its complexity, it should drink well for 5+ years.

Much more perfumed and spicy than the '06, the 2007 Domaine de Mourchon Côtes du Rhône Villages Séguret Grande Réserve, same elevage and blend, sports awesome aromatics of garrigue, wild strawberry, and kirsch fruit, dried flowers, and loads of minerality that comes though on the finish. Seductive and complex on the nose, the wine doesn't lose a beat on the palate and possesses beautifully ripe fruit, a round, soft texture, fresh acidity and enough tannin to allow this to evolve and drink well over the next 10 years. This is a superb wine the really highlights the beauty of the vintage. Well done!

As for the equally deep ruby/purple-colored 2007 Seguret Grande Reserve, this wine has much more licorice and more depth and body, but displays a similar aromatic and flavor profile. It is broad, expansive, and voluptuously textured, with stunning depth and richness. This is about as good as Seguret can be and actually competes with wines that are much more costly. Drink it over the next 7-10 years.

This excellent estate, which was purchased in 1998 by the McKinlay family and encompasses over 60 acres of relatively old vines, has proven over a short period of time to be one of the stars among all the Cotes du Rhone-Villages estates.

This is impressive for its array of dark fig, espresso, currant paste and hoisin sauce notes all laid over a tangy, minerally spine that drives the finish along. Mesquite, charcoal and braised beef notes add further dimension. Drink now through 2013. 3,750 cases made. -JM
