Castiglione Falletto. Deep ruby with orange tinged rim. Spicy, savoury and the merest hint of leather. Initially closed on fruit. Very compact on the palate too. Great interplay between acidity, fruit concentration and tannin. 17/20 (WS)

The 2007 Barolo Bricco Boschis is a massive, powerful wine. This is an unusually opulent Barolo from Cavallotto, with tons of red fruit and soft, sweet tannins. From time to time the wine's alcohol seems a bit pronounced. Still an infant, the Bricco Boschis needs to lose some of its baby fat before its true potential emerges. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. -Antonio Galloni

Good full red. Wild aromas of of plum, leather, graphite, chocolate and mocha. Very sweet, lush and silky; at once pretty and powerful, with the fat of the year backed by substantial tannins. Closed down in the glass. All of Cavalotto's Barolos are from this monopole vineyard. Incidentally, the 2008 Barolos will not be bottled until next April.

Here is textbook Barolo with long, fine tannins and elegant aromas of small berry fruit, mesquite wood, tar and black licorice. The wine also offers warm earthy notes and a fresh menthol-like touch on the close. Pair it with grilled lamb and chopped mint chutney. -M.L.
