Andy Frieden, JJ Buckley, April 2008

43% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc. The color is dark inky purple, almost opaque. The fruit is black berry and plum framed in mocha and caramelized toffee nougat. The palate is medium to full bodied with a beautiful attack of bright and pure red and black fruits with a hint of mocha chocolate framed in by well integrated tannins. I put this one at the top of my list for the vintage of First Growths along with Chateau Latour. Fat mid-palate and richness with plus concentration that everyone would want in a world class wine. Power and grace.

A brilliant effort, the 2007 Haut-Brion offers up aromas of crushed rocks, graphite, plum sauce, raspberries, and black cherries. The aromatics are truly complex for a three year-old wine. While the wine does not possess the fat and succulence of its nearby neighbor, La Mission Haut-Brion, its elegance, finesse, and nobility are apparent. Medium-bodied, rich, and intense with stunning aromatics, it can be drunk now or cellared for 15 years.

Bright ruby-red. Pure but youthfully inexpressive nose hints at raspberry and tobacco after extended aeration. Sweet, suave and pliant, with a silky texture perked up by minerality and lifted by a spicy component. Really lovely consistent ripeness here, showing neither roasted nor green qualities. Took on a more floral character with air. This superbly elegant wine really saturates the palate and lingers. Tannins are fine and sweet.

There's beautiful sweetness of fruit on the nose, with floral and ripe plum undertones. Very aromatic and subtle. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a delicate fruit finish. Refined. Best after 2013.

About Winery

Chateau Haut-Brion boasts a much more historic tradition as it is believed that grapes have been grown on the property since Roman times. However, the first true written record of Haut-Brion dates back to 1525 when Jean de Pontac married Jeanne de Bellon who brought him the dowry of the land that composes Haut-Brion. Chateau Haut-Brion also appeared in writing as a First Growth in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.

Haut-Brion has a truly illustrious past.  It is the first recorded First Growth to be imported into the United States when Thomas Jefferson purchased six cases and took them back to Monticello. Haut-Brion was also the first of the great growths to use stainless steel fermentation vats. The greatness of Haut-Brion wines was also recorded by Samuel Pepys, John Locke, and Cardinal Richelieu.  Its 1970s vintage placed fourth in the Judgement of Paris wine competition.  Haut-Brion remains quite the celebrity of the winemaking world and its wines continue to be highly rated and coveted across the globe.
