As its mixed cepage so clearly suggests, this wine is a bit firmer and more structured than classic Merlot is inclined to be, but it delivers lots of very varietal, ripe-cherry fruit and draws on tailored oak for a nice bit of sweet spice. Long, lightly tannic but with a convincing sense of juice showing throughout its length, this carefully crafted, deceptively deep bargain is sure to improve and can be confidently set aside for another two to five years.

2007 Columbia Valley Genesis Meritage (Best Buy) With scents of plum compote and violets, this merlot-cabernet blend is dark and inky at the outset. After a day it takes on merlot's more red-fruited inflections. It has the build and concentration for aging, and at this price, it's worth buying a case to enjoy over the course of the next few years.
