2007 Kesseler, August Riesling Qba Estate

about this wine:

Kesseler's Riesling comes from the Rüdesheimer Berg (Hugh Johnson calls this hill "germany's most magnificent vineyard") and from the lorcher Berg. Here the Riesling finds optimal ripening conditions. The mild climate and a long vegetative period are perfect for optimally ripe fruit. The soils are porous and force the grapevine to root deeply which bears two precious advantages: During dry years, grapevines can still reach necessary groundwater, and secondly wet years can't harm the vines. After being gently pressed, the Riesling is fermented and vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel vessels of various sizes. Lots are kept separate until bottling to preserve the terroir.

Anthony Dias Blue, The Tasting Panel Magazine, June 2009

Sweet peach fruit and finely-tuned acidity; lively and brisk with a touch of sweetness and plenty of nervy acid to balance.

Geoffrey Binder, JJ Buckley, July 2011

An open, pretty nose of stone fruit and floral notes leads into a palate that boasts white peach, nectarine and grapefruit, supported by spicy undertones. Bright and fresh, the slight sweetness is balanced by the crisp acidity, and this is drinking beautifully right now. Yet it still shows the weight and acid to age for another 5+ years. All that, and an excellent value to boot.

Restaurant Wine, April 2009

4 1/2 Stars! A medium bodied, finely flavored, crisp wine, that is off dry, well balanced, and very long on the finish, tasting of apple, honeysuckle, lime, peach, and pine resin. -Issue #130

88 points,

Wine Spectator, April 2009

Nicely balanced, with peach, melon and grapefruit notes getting support from the vibrant structure. This has intensity and leaves a tangy impression. Best from 2010 through 2018. 2,000 cases made. -BS

About Winery

Situated in the Assmannshausen in the Rheingau region, the wine estate of August Kesseler consists of vineyard sites in Lorch (for Riesling and Silvaner wines), on the slopes of the hills around Rüdesheim and in the area called "Assmanshäuser Höllenberg". August Kesseler took over the estate from his parents in 1977 as a young man, and has qualitatively expanded the best area under vines to 18 hectares (44.48 acres). The manor house and cellar are situated directly on the slate outcrops of the "Assmanshäuser Höllenberg".

Experience gained in winegrowing regions in the USA and France has taught August Kesseler the value in placing great importance on quality - improv-ing measures in the vineyard and in the cellar, which restore the characteristic flavor to the Assman-shäuser Spätburgun-der - a flavor which once made it world-famous - and which give the Riesling from the Rüdesheimer Berg a good balance between the typical acidity and the natural residual sugar.

"Not many years ago, August Kesseler was vinifying - in addition to the Pinot Noirs for which he has long been known - almost entirely dry Rieslings that were seldom seen outside Germany. Nowadays, he is reveling in residually sweet Rieslings and has launched an aggressive export program with the intention of becoming a major force in the U.S. market. Given the amazing price/quality rapport of some of the wines I tasted, he should succeed brilliantly in that endeavor." Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
