JJ Buckley: "Inky black purple with an opaque core bleeding out to a ruby rim. The nose is full of blackberry, cassis, black cherry, grilled meats and lavender. The secondary comes alive with a full offer of dark chocolate, mocha and sweet vanilla, showcasing the brilliant touch of oak. The palate is big and textured with full flavors of plum, sweet figs and ripe cherries. The mid palate is rich with supple tannins and great acidity that is well integrated. The finish is unbelievable and lasts nearly 45 seconds. I cannot wait to see how this wines evolves over the next 15-20 years." --Jeff Loo

Like any new winery, this is a work in progress, and the 2008 shows slightly better than the 2007 - but don't dismiss the 2007. Loads of black cherry, black currant, licorice, and spring flowers are present in this mid-weight, elegant, stylish wine, which offers up sweet tannin in a nice framework, with a well-balanced mouthfeel. It should drink nicely for 10-15 years.

from a steep, rocky site behind Stelzner Vineyards that winemaker Celia Welch describes as atypical for its appellation) Good saturated, bright ruby. Slightly medicinal aromas of blackberry, blueberry, mint and minerals. Silky on entry, then tighter but still pliant in the middle, with the black and blue fruit and mint flavors carrying through. Shows some Stags Leap dark chocolate character but this is distinctly more rocky and minerally than earthy in character. I like this firmly tannic cabernet's restrained sweetness, but it calls for at least a few years of cellaring.

Exhibits complex layers of ripe cherry, blackberry and currant, with touches of mocha-laced oak that are woven together nicely. Full-bodied, firming midpalate and ending with a long, persistent finish. Drink now through 2020. 480 cases made.

"First impressions of the aromas from this 100% cabernet sauvignon show lovely, perfumed essence of raspberries, roses and a touch of lilac, with darker cherry tones adding depth and a sense of mature-fruit. The sweet fruit character is remarkably focused and intense, reflecting its steep hillside origins. On the palate, the wine offers an elegant, full-bodied, soft, silky entry, with dark, warm berry fruit character. The mid-palate impression adds a subtle note of tobacco leaf and toasty vanilla, with just a hint of anise/spice adding complexity as the fresh berry notes linger. The finish is equally rich, exhibiting layers of complexity and a dense, mouth-coating texture. The overall density and concentration of the palate impression results from the very rocky vineyard source of this dark, rich cabernet. This 100% cabernet sauvignon was produced entirely from fruit grown on the Lindstrom estate in the Stags Leap District, Napa Valley. The eleven blocks of vineyard were assessed independently for ripeness, and were harvested by hand between September 7 and 19, 2007. The fruit was gently destemmed, then fermented in small tanks. After 14 to 22 days the fruit was pressed, then transferred to small barrels (80% new French oak) for about 21 months of barrel aging. The cabernet was blended in July 2008, returned to barrels, and bottled in May 2009. A total of 480 cases was produced."
