The classic 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape (made from the same blend and the same upbringing as the 2008) exhibits notes of lavender, kirsch, black raspberries, pepper, tobacco leaf, and spice box. Full-bodied, seductive, and round with a generous, full-bodied mouthfeel and tremendous length and purity, this beauty is made from the estateâ_Ts youngest vines, just under 40-years of age.

The energetic and very passionate Isabel Ferrando got her start in Chateauneuf du Pape in 2002, only to experience historic flooding and the most disastrous vintage since 1956 and 1932. However, she is a strong woman, and survived that calamitous vintage to turn out what was essentially her debut, the fabulous 2003s. She has followed that up with strong efforts in 2004, 2005, and 2006, and her greatest wines to date, the monumental 2007s. Interestingly most of her estate is located in the southernmost area of Chateauneuf du Pape, a region known as Serres, which is largely sandy soils. Until this visit, I had not realized how good the Saint-Prefert white wines are (only 400-500 cases produced in most vintages). To reiterate, the 2007s are the greatest wines Isabel Ferrando has yet made. They represent three sensational yet totally different styles of Chateauneuf du Pape.

($45) Bright red. Sexy aromas of raspberry, cherry, apricot and potpourri, with a subtle smoky quality. Plump, sweet red fruit flavors stain the palate, taking on a sexy floral impression on the back half. The sweet, energetic finish leaves behind notes of spices and floral pastille. Already drinking well but I'd hold off on opening this one for another couple of years. 91 points

About Winery

In the 1920's, Mr. Fernand Serre, a pharmacist in Avignon, discovered that a small piece of vineyard in Châteauneuf-du Pape bore his name : the Serres area. As a respectful winelover, he purchased about 80 hectares of vines, at the southern tip of the village of Châteauneuf.

Mr. Serre had been secretly dreaming for years of becoming a vintner. He quickly built the winery and learned winemaking techniques. Mr. Serre was one of the first vintners in Châteauneuf to bottle his own wine. Before Mr. Serre passed away, he took great, care of transmitting his know-how to his son Camille and his daughter-in-law, Suzanne.

Today, Isabel Ferrando perpetuates this know-how and passion for wine growing.

"Isabel Ferrando is a great story. Coming from the banking business outside of the Rhone but loving the wines, along with her husband, she acquired an estate of over 42 acres and has since added some additional acreage, now totaling 55 acres. Domaine St.-Prefert is one of a handful of estates that made great wines in 2003, following that up with strong performances in 2005 and 2006, producing blockbusters in 2007, and now hitting pay dirt again in 2009 and 2010. The only change she has made during that period is that both in 2009 and 2010, she has gone to 100% stem inclusion during her fermentation. Otherwise, the different blends and the elevage remain the same. If you haven't discovered it yet, this is an up-and-coming superstar with three cuvees of Chateauneuf du Pape under the label of Domaine Saint-Prefert and her 100% Grenache cuvee under the moniker of Isabel Ferrando Colombis." --- Robert Parker
