2008 Bindi Chardonnay Quartz
Chardonnay: 750ml
$78.99
about this wine:
Bindi Quartz Chardonnay was planted in 1988. At the upper end of the Chardonnay planting, where the quartz incidence in the soil is the greatest the fruit has extra complexity, finesse and intensity. This wine comes exclusively from this soil. This area is approximately half one hectare in size. The characteristics are similar in the Quartz Chardonnay to the Composition Chardonnay but all aspects are amplified here yet remain in complete harmony.
The winemaking is the same for both wines however the Quartz Chardonnay sometimes spends a few months longer in barrel and there is a higher percentage of new wood used, being around 35%.
Production varies from 150-250 dozen per vintage.

Pale straw-green; improbably though it may seem, this takes the purity and intensity of '09 Composition to another level; the flavours persist in the mouth for an astonishingly long time after the wine is swallowed, fruit, acid, oak and mineral so seamlessly intertwined it is impossible to separate them.

Light gold. Spicy citrus and orchard fruits on the nose, with a slow-building spicy quality and exotic notes of mace and truffle. Round, sappy, palate-staining pear and Meyer lemon flavors are complemented by a toasty lees note and lifted by tangy minerality. This complex chardonnay finishes with impressive clarity and lingering smokiness. -JR

Taut, focused and distinctive, with a strong minerality weaving through the slightly salty pear and lime flavors. All the pieces are in place, this just needs time in the cellar. Best from 2012 through 2020. 350 cases made. -HS
