Dense ruby red core with a brilliant red rim. On the nose, a touch of oak surrounds a beautiful core of ripe blackberry, boysenberry and olalliberry, framed by a hint of mocha chocolate. This rich pinot noir boasts soft tannins and a melange of dark fruit and chocolate flavors complemented by a subtle touch of dried herbs. Each sip has it all-fruit, tannin, acidity, power and elegance. A super refined effort that should start drinking well in a few years and go easily for the next 15-20.

A ripe, earthy and reserved nose of cool dark berry fruit and humus leads to supple, round and relatively generous medium weight plus flavors that possess good power and fine complexity on the moderately austere and solidly lengthy finish. This is not a particularly big example of the appellation and is actually relatively forward and accessible.

Perrot-Minot's 2008 Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes - racked to tank two weeks before I tasted it - smells of purple plum, dark cherry, and charred red meat. Graphite, crushed stone, carbon, and black pepper seem to suffuse the rich fruit and meat juices on an expansive but firm palate. Saliva-inducing salinity mingles with lip-curling tannin in the long finish of this dense, muscular Pinot that I suspect will be a 20 year wine. --- David Schildknecht
