Eddie Wolowski, JJ Buckley, May 2013

Dark, inky violet core with a light ruby rim. The bouquet reveals notes of ripe dark fruit, along with toast, spice, stewed plum and berry compote, graham cracker and cassis. With its medium to full body, this has just enough minerality and finesse to add lift to the palate, with gentle tannins coming through at the end. A bit more modern, but quite pleasurable. This is approachable already, with the ability to evolve over the next 3-5 years - but why wait? This will be a crowd pleaser.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2011

A sleeper of the vintage, this impressive, full-bodied, surprisingly concentrated 2008 offers an opaque ruby/purple color as well as a glorious perfume of lead pencil shavings, spring flowers, blueberry liqueur and cassis. Full-bodied and impressively broad and savory with silky tannins, it is an unqualified success in the vintage. Enjoy it over the next 10-15 years.

Wine Enthusiast, April 2011

Very structured, its acidity allowing freshness while the dominant tannins give weight. The fruit lies comfortably underneath, the current bitter edge sure to be integrated over a few years. For medium-term aging. R.V.

90 points,

Wine Spectator, May 2011

Ripe and deep, with damson plum, black currant and linzer torte fruit aromas and flavors caressed by lush, spice-infused toast. The long finish is filled with licorice and graphite. Best from 2012 through 2018. 4,000 cases made. -JM

About Winery

Mayne comes from the word "manor", which used to mean "a fine house surrounded by a certain amount of land".

The old description and the modern concept are both eminently suitable to describe this magnificent property built between the end of the 15th and the early 16th centuries. The Laveau family can be traced back to Grand Mayne as early as 1685. Jacques Laveau, was the first to settle at Mayne, but it was his son, Jean, who in 1811, bought Chateau Soutard. That enabled him to extend his estate. Unfortunately, the cascading dominoes of inheritance rapidly put an end to the Laveau empire.

After several other owners, Jean Nony, a wine negociant from the Correze, purchased the current estate Grand Mayne in 1934. Jean Pierre (son of Jean Nony) and Marie Francoise Nony managed the estate from 1977 to 2001. Since the death of her husband, Marie-Francoise continues to manage surrounded by a competent team and her two sons.
