Although this big, boldly-styled Kirwan is less concentrated than some recent vintages have been, it is an impressive effort revealing a dense ruby/purple color as well as aromas of new oak, black currants, roasted herbs, and graphite. Full and rich with plenty of tannin to shed, although the tannins are melted and unaggressive (fondu as the French would say), this 2008 should evolve for two decades or more.

Bright ruby-red. Brooding aromas of blackberry and licorice. Intensely flavored but a bit youthfully musclebound, with a medicinal reserve to its dark berry flavors. In a rather extractive style, but there's plenty of fruit here. I'd give this at least a few years for its slightly disjointed tannins and acids to harmonize.
