John Sweeney, JJ Buckley, April 2009

This has an extremely flowery nose, as well as notes of red raspberry, and a slight earthy/herbal note that adds complexity to this wine. On the palate I get violets, cassis, caramel, and lavender. Copious tannins are present but are smooth and silky.

Tasted ex-château and single blind in Southwold. The Leoville Barton 2008 has a very ripe, opulent bouquet that reminded me of Poyferré! It has impressive definition and purity; very good lift but there is a lot of oak to be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent, velvety entry that disguises its serious tannic backbone. It is very stylish and suave, although there is just a touch of dryness towards the finish. I think it will improve with another decade on the clock. Tasted January 2012. 91+

Typically extracted and powerful (which is atypical in a vintage such as 2008), this offering may lack charm, but it is "locked and loaded" with plenty of background oak, huge black cherry and black currant fruit, medium to full body and a boatload of tannin. Forget it for 8-10 years and drink it over the following three decades.

Bright ruby. Sexy, ripe nose combines cassis, Cuban cigar tobacco, licorice and minerals. Sweet, tactile and intense, with concentrated, sharply delineated flavors of dark fruits and minerals. Densely packed, ripe and deep. Offers a lovely combination of silky texture, firm structure and the aromatic lift and nuance of the vintage's best examples. Should age gracefully for at least 15 years.

# 12 on Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2011; A dense, beautifully structured wine. It shows intense, ripe fruit with balanced acidity. It's the fine tannins that give it such class, surrounding the fruit, promising long aging. This is a classic for Léoville-Barton. R.V.

Alluring, with warm fig sauce, plum and currant paste notes liberally laced with espresso bean and dark roasted vanilla bean notes. Fleshy but focused, with the roasted edge adding definition and length. Drink now through 2019. -JM

About Winery

Chateau Leoville Barton is the third (and smallest) piece of the famous trio of Saint Julien properties that 200 years ago formed one estate (Chateau Leoville) belonging to Alexandre de Gasq. It has been the property of the illustrious Barton family since 1836. Leoville Barton has no actual house or winery, so the wine is made and bottled at the Barton's neighboring property, Chateau Langoa-Barton...Leoville Barton lies between the towns of Beychevelle and Saint Julien, the estate's few buildings sit directly on the vineyard road, and the vineyards lie just to its west...Vineyard is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, 0% Cabernet Franc. This planting mix has evolved over the years since Anthony Barton took over the management of the Leoville Barton. The percentage of Merlot has increased from about 15% in the 1970s and Cabernet Franc has disappeared.
