Elegance on a grand scale. Fine, tight red with layers of fruit/berry and savoury, spicy flavours. Aromatic wine with a pleasing floral lift. An impressive Bordeaux blend from a relatively new but very promising Waiheke Island producer.

Chuck Hayward, JJ Buckley, January 2011

52% merlot, 27% cabernet franc, 10.5% malbec, 9.1% petit verdot, 1.4% cabernet sauvignon. Darkly colored, this complex Bordeaux-style red offers up super-attractive aromas of graphite and stone with hints of spice and pepper, followed by chocolate and fresh coffee. Fairly full-bodied, the bright, clean flavors are juicy and round with strong structural components of oak and tannin providing a firm finish. Not overly tannic, this tasty red will certainly improve with some time in the cellar, though it is approachable now thanks to finely woven acids that lighten the wine's presence. An excellent value.

The multi-award winning 2008 Ironclad has a tight, leafy nose that unfurls in the glass to reveal blackberry, raspberry leaf, a touch of fresh fig and boysenberry jam. The palate is medium-bodied, firm tannins, good weight, gentle but firm grip with a finely tuned, almost Cote-Rotie-like finish. This is one of Waiheke emerging stars: a top class Merlot that should age well. Drink 2011-2017. -Neal Martin
