Chuck Hayward, JJ Buckley, May 2011

Sourced from the Ebenezer, Kalmina and Moppa subregions in the northern Barossa Valley. Aged for 14 months in 83% new French hogsheads. Opaque in color with a magenta rim. This sample was particularly closed and backwards, requiring quite a bit of air, which led to a small core of black fruit and later hints of chocolate and freshly turned earth. Medium-full bodied, the palate profile for this vintage is elegant and focused with a beautiful expression of fruit forming the foundation of a very long finish supported by fine tannins. There is potential for greater presence on the palate with some aging, though this is approachable now.

Glorious, deep crimson-purple, with an alluring bouquet of black fruits, spice and cedary oak contributed by 14 months' maturation in 83% new French hogsheads. The medium- to full-bodied palate has layer-upon-layer of velvety blackberry fruit allied with notes of dark chocolate and a sprinkle of licorice and spice, silky tannins and quality oak completing the package.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2012

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2008 RWT Shiraz presents quite a lot of cedar over notes of pure blackberry and black cherry fruit with hints of cinnamon stick, toast and underbrush. Medium bodied, concentrated and taut in the mouth, it has firm, grainy tannins and crisp acidity, finishing long. A little disjointed at this stage, it needs time to marry and should drink best 2014 to 2023+. 93+ --Lisa Perotti-Brown

Stephen Tanzer's IWC, October 2011

Deep violet. Complex bouquet of red and dark berries is complemented by smoky minerals, potpourri, anise and black pepper. Rich but focused on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and cassis flavors, a velvety texture and strong mineral snap. This elegant, precise wine boasts impressive finishing sweetness. For such a rich wine, this is very graceful and surprisingly approachable, although it's built to age.

Full-bodied and richly textured, with Penfolds' hallmark weight and structure on full display, the 2008 RWT shows a touch of the vintage's characteristic warmth, but only a touch. The cassis and blackberry fruit is plush, velvety and superripe, ending with hints of tobacco, mint and vanilla. It should drink well for at least a decade. --Joe Czerwinski

Made entirely with Barossa Valley shiraz, as always - and this year matured in 83 percent new French oak (the highest percentage of new oak in Penfolds RWT since the 1998). No doubting it: this is a wine of impact. Big blueberried fruit, big blue-cedar oak. Spice and rich, ripe, robust plummy flavour. Stains the glass an inky purple. Warm, brandied aftertaste but it has the power to shift the flavours right through. It was a hot vintage but they've brought this baby home. Given its power, it is remarkably composed and bright. Grunty tannin makes the wine feel like it has `a big motor'. If you were being critical, you'd say that it lacks nuance or, perhaps, complexity - but time could well take care of that. Looking forward to giving this another try in the next few weeks. --Campbell Mattinson

About Winery

Penfolds was founded by a young English doctor, Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold, who migrated to one of his country's most distant colonies over a century and a half ago.

In 1844 Dr Penfold and his wife Mary purchased the Mackgill estate, "comprising 500 acres of the choicest land." By all accounts it was Mary Penfold who was responsible for the management and early wine-making responsibilities of the fledgling wine estate.

By the early 1960s Max Schubert saw the creation of a dynasty of wines that may differ in character from year to year, but would all bear an unmistakable resemblance to each other. The backbone of Penfolds' emerging red wine portfolio - Bin 389, Bin 707, Bin 28 and Bin 128 - were all introduced during this time.

The remarkable reintroduction of Penfolds Bin 707 in 1976 illustrated Penfolds' commitment to a premium Cabernet Sauvignon and within just a few years would come to be recognized as one of Australia's leading wines.
