The most open and friendly of Ravenswood's six single-site Zins, this intense, keenly focused effort is brimming with blackberry fruit. Ripe and rounded and very full on the palate, it is firmed by a temperate bit of last-minute tannin but steers clear of any semblance of toughness. While its inviting juiciness makes it so easy to like now, it is nicely balanced and will keep comfortably for a many years.

Bright ruby. Cherry compote and dark berry liqueur aromas are complicated by pipe tobacco, violet, apricot and licorice qualities; smells a lot like syrah. Broad, palate-staining dark fruit flavors are framed by velvety tannins and become spicier with air. Packs serious punch but carries no fat and betrays no rough edges. The tannins fade away on the sweet, juicy finish, which strongly repeats the floral notes.

Imagine the soft, smooth texture of a fine Merlot. Then combine it with the briary, peppery flavors of a Sonoma Zinfandel. That's what you get in this dry, complex young wine. It's a classic Zinfandel that, despite high alcohol, doesn't feel hot. - S.H.
