Soft, rich and reasonably silken Pinot Noir that achieves more concentration and a better texture than most Central Otago wines from this vintage. It displays an array of red fruit, spice, chocolate and new leather flavours. Amisfield Pinot Noir has achieved a remarkable consistency in style and quality with this wine over many vintages.

Opaque at the core with a youthful brickish robe and a thin pink rim, the powerful aromas of sour cherries mix with sweet vanilla-laced, cinnamon and nutmeg spices while also revealing some smoke, milk chocolate and fresh earth. A fairly full bodied attack rolls into a mouthfilling midpalate that avoids any heaviness thanks to some appropriate acid levels that act to keep the fruit light on its feet. Showing off some darker fruit flavors, this light-medium bodied pinot is balanced throughout and finishes with the faintest layer of talc-like tannins.

I reckon this wine has a fair bit to offer. It's fleshy and fruity and not at all lacking in the flavour department - as we've come to expect from Central Otago pinot noir. It offers a decent mouthful of cherry-plum fruit flavour, and while these flavours have a gentle sweetness - as you'd expect from ripe fruit - I'd almost call it a savoury style, due to its earthy, spicy highlights. But what i really like about this wine is its chalky tannin, and indeed chalky flavour through the finish. It gives it something extra.

Lithe and inviting, offering a harmonious style that balances cherry, plum and fresh fig flavors against fine tannins and lively balance. Drink now through 2017. -Harvey Steiman
