Saturated opaque ruby core with a magenta rim. Aromas of black currant and cranberry dominate the bouquet, along with mocha, smokey vanilla and savory herbs. On entry this wine absolutely sings, with generous ripe black cherry, fleshy plum, licorice and iodine. Completely mouthcoating, with savory hints of tar and pepper at the back. The very attractive, silky tannins and long, mineral-driven finish make this a joy to drink now but judging from the old-world structure, this has the capacity to last upwards of 10-12 more years. This is a modern Rioja with traditional roots that both schools should find very rewarding.

The 2008 Lan A Mano Edicion Limitada is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano selected from 35-year-old vines from "Pago El Rincon" and "Vina Lanciano" vineyards, aged in new French oak for six months and then four months in new Russian casks. That oak influence dominates the aromatics, but underneath that carapace are dark plum, boysenberry and licorice notes that will surface with bottle age. The palate is certainly more modern in style compared to the rest of Lan's portfolio with sumptuous, decadent dark plum and cassis fruit and an unashamed voluptuous finish. Yet it is still very well-crafted and will appeal to those that like a silky sheen to their Rioja wines. Drink 2014-2020

This bold red delivers expressive flavors of black cherry, raspberry, chocolate, licorice and mineral, backed by firm tannins under a dense, plush texture. Fruit-forward and modern in style, yet the leafy and spicy notes keep this rooted. Drink now through 2020.3,000 cases made. -TM
