Jeff Loo, JJ Buckley, February 2011

55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Stephane Derenoncourt consults with owner Stefan von Neipperg. Aromas of sweet black raspberry, cassis, licorice, herbs and black truffle fill the nose. The palate is full bodied, laced with elegant tannins and fresh acidity that give this wine length and focus. A fantastic wine! This is drinking well now and will continue to improve over the next 15+ years.

John Perry, JJ Buckley, April 2009

(Tasted with Stephane Derenoncourt). Starts out with a complex and gorgeous nose of ripe dark fruit, racy minerality, and flowers. This has some serious weight and a great core of fruit. Exceptional length here, chocolate crème notes find their way into the finish and integrated tannins round this wine out. Awesome!

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2011

A sensational sleeper of the vintage, this modern-styled St.-Emilion boasts a dark purple color along with a beautiful bouquet of black olives, cherry jam, incense, spicy oak and black currants. Full-bodied, unctuously textured, lush, seductive and gloriously perfumed, this strikingly intense claret can be drunk now and over the next 12-15 years. Bravo!

Wine Spectator, December 2010

Dense and ripe, with flashes of Black Mission fig, Turkish coffee and roasted apple wood running through the dense core of plum sauce, black licorice and currant paste. The long finish has ample depth and grip, with a singe of black tea. A very classy wine. Best from 2013 through 2019.-J.M.

About Winery

Château Canon-la-Gaffelière is owned by Comte von Neipperg. Located in the centre of the St.Emilion appellation, due south of St.Emilion town, the property has a similar climate to that enjoyed by both St.Emilion and Pomerol: more continental than the maritime Médoc, with generally more spring rainfall, though less in summer and winter. Canon-la-Gaffelière's 19.5 hectares of vineyards (Merlot 55%, Cabernet Franc 40%, Cabernet Sauvignon 5%) lie at the base of the`Côtes', on relatively flat, sandy-gravel topsoil and sandy-clay subsoil. Vinification at Canon-la-Gaffelière is traditional: up to 4 weeks in temperature-controlled-wooden vats followed by up to 18 months' maturation in oak barrels, 50% new. It is classified as a Grand Cru Classé.
