David Derby, JJ Buckley, April 2009

51% Merlot; 41% Cabernet Sauvignon; 8% Petite Verdot. Pleasant plum notes highlighted by spearmint and licorice. Solid middle weight, tannins come off sharp and rough.

Palmer knows what to do. Plenty of blackberry and licorice aromas and flavors follow through to full body, with chewy tannins and a vanilla, cedar and chocolate aftertaste. Needs time to mellow. Layered and beautiful. Best after 2012.

Jancis Robinson, February 2012

Very deep youthful purplish crimson. Intriguingly dense. Lots of minerals here. Great opulence as it hits the palate. Really seems much riper than most. There is even some sweetness here. Draws to a dry conclusion gently, like purse strings gently carefully pulled (a particularly apt metaphor?). There is lots and lots in here. What top-quality red Bordeaux is all about: terroir and meticulousness. 18.5/20

A stunning success for the vintage, and possibly the Margaux of the year, this wine, which achieved 13.5% natural alcohol, is a blend of 51% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot. Loads of barbecue smoke, licorice, incense, blackberry, new saddle leather and forest floor notes jump from the glass of this dense, purple-colored wine. Extraordinarily intense and full-bodied, with plenty of tannin, but not the formidable structure of the 2010, this is going to be one of the longest-lived wines of 2008. It is full, rich, layered, and should be reasonably approachable with 3-4 years of bottle age, and will also keep for 30+ years.

Full medium ruby. Inviting, almost liqueur-like aromas of dark raspberry, sexy spices and tobacco lifted by a floral quality. Broad and plush but precise and fine-grained, with a layered texture to the concentrated flavors of red and dark berries and dark chocolate. Really builds toward the back but the wine's compelling thickness of fruit is nicely leavened by sneaky minerality. Finishes with noble tannins and captivating energy and perfume.

Rich and concentrated, touched easily by toasty wood. The tannins are so sweet, blending easily into the powerful texture of black berry fruits with, hints of licorice. This is a ripe wine, its acidity always present. - R.V.

Offers dark plum, mulled currant and blackberry notes, with flashes of roasted apple wood and maduro tobacco, plus cocoa and espresso. There's nicely rounded flesh and a long, integrated finish that has some extra grip. Clearly apart from the Margaux pack in 2008. Best from 2013 through 2019.-J.M.

About Winery

Château Palmer is named after a British officer, Major General Palmer, who settled in Bordeaux in 1814. It is the top estate of the Margaux appellation after Château Margaux. It is located in the centre of the Margaux appellation, and its vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 55%, Merlot 40%, Cabernet Franc 5%) lie on a sparse gravel plateau. Palmer is classified as a 3ème Cru Classé and was established as a Super Second long before Léoville Las Cases, Ducru-Beaucaillou and Pichon-Lalande, and in some years (1961, 1966, and 1983) it is as good as any wine in Bordeaux. Palmer's relatively high Merlot content makes Palmer the closest in style of any leading Médoc properties to the great wines of Pomerol and St-Emilion.
