54% cabernet sauvignon, 46% merlot. Aged for 16-18 months in half new French oak. From vines with an average age of 35 years. Way more "Bordeaux" than the 2008 and 2009, starting to show some bottle bouquet with delicate aromas of wet earth, mushroom, and fresh herbs. Very balanced with terrific acid and refreshing fresh fruit.

Deep ruby, bordering on purple at the core. The nose is quite complex and seductive with notes of boysenberry, raspberry, fresh roasted coffee and granite. On the palate it's smooth and refined with soft, powdery tannins. This is a pleasant modern styled Bordeaux blend that even at this very young age shows a lot of potential. Start drinking in 2-3 years and cellar for 10-12.

Another sleeper of the vintage, the relatively evolved, elegant, complex 2008 Haut-Bergey offers up notes of smoked tobacco, cassis, cherries, licorice, Asian plum sauce and spice box. With abundant fruit, an opulent texture and an elegant style, this pretty, medium-bodied, richly fruity wine should drink well for 12-14 years.

Bright ruby-red. Wild, smoky aromas of redcurrant, plum, meat and leather. Concentrated, saline and serious, with a slightly rustic quality to the plum and leather flavors. A firm but fine coating of tannins give this seamless wine good spine.

Barrel sample. A wine that offers all the right characters. The fruit has a lively, vivid juiciness, with sweet berry fruits. The tannins have just a touch of toast, but essentially come from the dense fruit. R.V.
