Strong crimson-purple; a top quality shiraz, picked before the heatwave and made using the same techniques as Freedom, and has similar intensity, focus and length; here only one-third new French barriques, but the oak is a positive contributor.

The 2008 Orphan Bank Shiraz gives a deep garnet-purple color and very earthy nose of underbrush and damp loam over dried Provence herbs, black cherry, blackberry and a touch of cinnamon stick. The full-bodied, richly fruited palate has fine structure with firm grainy tannins and high acidity supporting the flesh through the long finish. Drink it now to 2019+.

Bright purple. Black raspberry and cherry preserve aromas are complicated by suggestions of cracked pepper, cola and flowers. Soft, sweet and round, with nicely concentrated dark berry preserve flavors, pliant tannins and an exotic spicy character. The focused, spicy finish repeats the black raspberry note.

Dark and dense, with a juicy feel to the very ripe cherry, plum and exotic spice flavors. A flash of roasted red pepper adds interest to the finish. Drink now through 2016. -HS
