2008 Mer Soleil Chardonnay Barrel Fermented
Chardonnay: 750ml
$29.99
about this wine:
Mer Soleil Chardonnay is made in a complex, barrel-fermented style reminiscent of the white wines of Burgundy but with the generous, sun-ripened flavors of California. In the winery, all the vineyard lots are kept separate and fermented for 1 year in French oak barrels chosen from an array of coopers. Depending on the vintage, a varying portion will undergo malolactic fermentation, and the length of barrel aging is adjusted lot by lot. Finally, the wine is blended, maintaining distinct layers of flavor and balanced acidity.

Here is a nicely managed Chardonnay that captures the typically sweet fruit and weighty richness of the Santa Lucia Highlands version, and it does so without being too much of a good thing. It is optimally ripened and decked out with plenty of sweet oak, yet it is measured and mannerly all the same, and its accessible style tags it as one for drinking soon.

The color is golden straw, and the nose is big and rich, accentuated by butterscotch, hazelnut and toasted coconut. Meanwhile, the palate is clean and fresh with a nice rich texture and notes of spicy pears, tropical fruit and crisp apple on the finish.
