Neil Mechanic, JJ Buckley, April 2011

The native grape of Mt. Etna, Nerello Mascalese comes to life in this glass with aromatics of candied raspberry and mulling spice. Concentrated raspberry becomes more pronounced on the palate along with inviting cherry and licorice back tones. The wine finishes with focused elegance, showcasing chiseled minerality that melds together with mouthwatering acidity. Don't be fooled by the translucent hue, this effort has great depth and layers of spice that will ultimately need another year or two to develop. The 2008 is a baby and deserves another year to 5 years to showcase its pedigree. Like a quality pinot or nebbiolo this wine deserves a well-appointed slow braised meat dish. Heavenly!

93 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, June 2010

The 2008 Passopisciaro emerges with gorgeous textural richness in its elegant, silky tannins. Despite its considerable concentration, the wine literally floats on the palate with layers of perfumed red fruits. Everything is perfectly balanced in this harmonious, utterly impeccable wine. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.

About Winery

In 2000, prior to the Etna and its ancient vineyards becoming a place of pilgrimage and home to a new generation of wine, Andrea Franchetti decided to create a new farm on the slopes of the volcano. Born Passopisciaro cellar, 40 acres in the town of Castiglione di Sicilia, on the north side of Etna, about a thousand meters of altitude, where Andrea Franchetti vinified grapes from old and very old vines in the area. The first wine produced was Passopisciaro, made from nerello mascalese.
