Andy Frieden, JJ Buckley, April 2009

90% Merlot; 10% Cabernet Franc - 70% new oak and 30% one year used barrels. 30hls/ha yields from 48 year old vines on a plateau next to and just under Chateau Pavie and above and adjacent to Pavie Macquin and across the small valley from Ausone. Black vibrant purple core with fuchsia rim. Such a pretty nose of crushed flowers, rose petal, and sweet ripe black fruits including blackberry (mure) liquor and cassis de Dijon are persistent and precise. Secondary nose of crushed rocks anise and fresh pavement adds complexity. The entry on the palate is dense and precise showing off ripe, polished fruit that expands nicely on the lush mid-palate. One of the top Right Bank releases year after year.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2011

Another top-notch effort, the 2008 is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc produced from yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare. It reached 14% natural alcohol, no doubt because of the extremely late harvest. A deep purple color is accompanied by massive notes of blackberries, incense, fruitcake, camphor and toasty oak intermixed with a crushed chalk-like minerality (a hallmark of this vineyard). The wine has softened considerably in bottle, and while it seems more structured than the 2010, it reveals a degree of accessibility. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2035. 94+

Wine Spectator, December 2010

This is exotic and ambitious, with tiers of anise, violet, roasted fig, melted licorice and racy graphite offset by lush spice and blackberry confiture notes. The powerful finish lets everything play out with excellent definition. Unabashedly modern. Best from 2013 through 2021.-J.M.

About Winery

Château Pavie Decesse, a St.Emilion Grand Cru Classé property is now producing wines the equal of its illustrious brother Chateau Pavie. Both properties were previously owned by the Valet family until they were purchased by Gérard Perse, owner of Château Monbousquet, in 1997. Pavie-Decesse is situated in the heart of the Côtes sub-district of St. Emilion, with the vineyards being planted on chalky, clay soils.
